What I help with
About me
I'm Andy, and have been an accredited psychotherapist and counsellor for over fifteen years. Prior to that I worked in the public and charity sectors, building helping relationships with people of all backgrounds. It is my belief that counselling should be a flexible and supportive process; firmly grounded in theory but also adapted to the strains and difficulties of modern life. My particular areas of experience are around sexual and gender identity, trauma, relationship and sexual difficulties, anxiety and depression, bereavement and chronic illness, but I am happy to work with any issue.
My approach with men
Most of my work experience has been with people who are unfamiliar with therapy, or those who find the 'typical' language of therapy quite off-putting - this has included a lot of men. I was drawn to the field as I wanted to help people, but I myself found that a lot of the language didn't work for me, as a man. I was also shocked to realise how few men were involved in talking therapies, despite knowing that men's mental health is very much in need of attention. My approach to therapy is to try to adapt it to what you need it to be, as much as possible, in a plain speaking and friendly way.
How we get started
If I can help at all, or if you would like a brief and informal chat about what therapy involves and how it might help you, please do get in touch - I would be very happy to hear from you. Alternatively if you would prefer to just book an initial session straight away, that is fine too.
